Boaters Workshop – DSC Radio – It's Not Just for "Mayday" Anymore

21 May 2020 - 19:00

DSC Workshop

Where: Online using Google Meet (Instructions will be supplied)

A properly installed VHF DSC Radio is literally a life saver.  However, very few users take advantage of the added capability of Digital Selective Calling.  This workshop will discuss the advantages, and typical procedures for each call.

  • DSC Test Call
  • Individual Call
  • Group Call
  • Position Request
  • Position Report

To take advantage of DSC features, you should have your unique MMSI programmed into your radio.  For boats that you wish to call, you should also have their MMSI’s, stored in your radio.   To take advantage of position features, your radio should be connected to a GPS.  (Some newer radios have built-in GPS).

Each VHF radio manufacturer has slightly different terminology and programming procedures.  If you have a DSC radio, it will be helpful to have your manual on hand.  (Most radio manufacturers have manuals that can be downloaded on-line.  On-line manuals also make it easier to search !)

There is no charge for the workshop.

This short workshop will not cover Mayday “distress” calls, Pan-Pan, Secruite, or “All Ships” calls.  Nor will it discuss normal VHF voice communications.

Register for this class and you will receive emailed notes prior to the workshop.  ASPS members will also get the current MMSI directory for squadron members.  If your MMSI is not listed, we can add it to the list.

Duration: 20-30 minutes, including opportunity for questions.

Presenter: Brian Logan
