America’s Boating Course

Taking a boating class reduces your risk of accidents and injuries, saves you money on boat insurance, and qualifies you for meeting the requirements for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Boater Education Law.

America’s Boating Course is the most comprehensive, single source, in-person boating course available to give you the skills you need to enjoy your time on the water and boat with confidence.

Current classes offered by the Akron Sail & Power Squadron:

Boat Handling

Online, Instructor led

Learn how to handle your boat in a variety of situations and become the skipper you want to be. Gain confidence in docking, underway, anchoring, and other seamanship skills. Our new Boat Handling course is intended for newer recreational boaters who have completed a basic boating class (like America’s Boating Course) and want to gain more knowledge, skill, and confidence to boat safely and have more fun in a variety of situations.

Advanced Piloting

In Person, Instructor led

Advanced Piloting is the second in the sequence of USPS courses on navigation. It continues to build coastal and inland navigation skill, allowing the student to take on more challenging conditions – unfamiliar waters, limited visibility, and extended cruises. GPS is embraced as a primary navigation tool while adding radar, chartplotters, and other electronic navigation tools. As with Marine Navigation and Piloting, the course includes many in-class exercises, advancing the student’s skills through hands-on practice and learning. Ten classes of two hours each normally are scheduled for presentation of this course. In addition the students have seven days to complete the open book exam.

Cruising Under Power and Sail

Online, Instructor led

Although the details of cruising differ for coastal and inland boating, the planning process is similar. The basics that boaters need to know for coastal cruising also apply to lake and river boating. This course covers the overall preparation and process for cruising in the sixteen chapters with a course length of eight two-hour sessions. The 8th session is for class presentation of the cruise planning exercise. The course will be hybrid.  First class will be in person, then every other class online.  The final test will be in-person.

Paddle Smart On-the-water Kayak Training

On the Water, Instructor led

Paddling is an opportunity to get close to nature, have fun and get quality exercise. That’s why it’s the fastest growing part of recreational boating today. ASPS Kayak Seminar is intended for those about to join the sport or those considering purchasing paddling equipment. Seminar is open to the public.
