Marine Navigation
Course starting Wednesday, Feb 1, from 7:00 – 9:00PM. The classes will be held
The classes run from 7 to 9PM each Wednesday evening for 10 weeks, through April 5. The
class is open to the public. Novice and experienced boaters alike will learn the latest
techniques for piloting recreational boats in coastal and inland waters.
This course focuses on practical navigation for recreational vessels, learning techniques used
on bodies of water such as Lake Erie or the Ohio River. It embraces GPS as a primary
navigation tool while also covering the traditional techniques of plotting courses.
“Marine Navigation” teaches techniques for determining position and direction on paper
charts, so students can find their way, even if their GPS fails. Reading charts, understanding
navigation aids, setting up waypoints and routes, and monitoring progress and position by
both GPS and traditional charting, compass and dead reckoning skills are also covered. The
course includes many in-class exercises, developing student skills through hands-on practice
and learning.
The fee for the course is $187. Members of Akron Sail and Power Squadron get a $75
discount. The fee includes a 116 page United States Power Squadron® (USPS) “Marine
Navigation” student manual, the 275 page book, “The Weekend Navigator” and the USPS
University Guide, “Plotting & Labeling Standards (20 pages). Also included is a 4” x 15”
course plotter and a set of basic dividers.
